Tape

Tape

As an experiment Tape works quite brilliantly. A single setting with only three characters and unfolding in real time director Richard Linklater obviously chose to embrace the story’s origin as a play instead of trying to razzle dazzle thing up - as is sometimes the folly of other directors when adapting such material.

The simple set-up is as follows: A manic small time drug dealer is staying in a hotel where he has come to support his old schoolmate who has a new film playing at a local festival. They meet, have an uneasy catch-up, and start to reminisce about old times...in particular a secret one of them has been hiding, and trying to forget.

Exquisitely low-budget with such quality cast and proven talent behind the camera, Tape is deeply intriguing and totally gripping as like the characters, it craftily takes its time unfolding its secrets.
