Thank You For Smoking

Thank You For Smoking

Frankly I was expecting more. The way people had been talking about Thank You For Smoking, and from the quite funny glimpse of it from the previews, I was under the impression this was one fucking subversive black comedy. It ain't. Mind you, it's still better than 95% of shit out there.

More about political correctness and the freedom of choice than about smoking, Smoking actually has more in common with the gun-smuggling film Lord of War than one would hope for. Both have a fast-talking morally bankrupt but charming-as-hell main character (here played nicely by Aaron Eckheart) that sprouts his brazen philosophies leading to some cracking good lines, but where Lord of War felt like a Syriana or Traffic-lite, Thank You For Smoking just feels plain lite, keeping the satire simple and obvious and never once going in for the jugular. Pity, as with a sharper eye and a meaner streak this could have been something quite cool.
