Last Tango In Paris

Maybe I’m too many years out of university film studies, but more and more I find these arty classics that my former lecturers would have lavishly spruiked praise on just fall flat with me.

I’m sure on one level this film is an intense and captivating study of isolation, loneliness and relationships but I found Brando’s obvious open-slather approach to ad-libbing so distracting, rather than brilliant, to bother looking for that level. But perhaps had I sat through a two hour lecture educating me with the back-story, anecdotes, and social importance of the film I may have been brainwashed to say otherwise.
