Ocean

Ocean's Eleven

After the boring indulgent Oceans 12 my memory of the first outing of Clooney, Pitt, Damon and the gang was perhaps tainted by the crappy sequel. I figured it was probably just as weak and also as great a sedative substitute as the second one was, but as I went to throw out my old VHS copy of it I thought I'd give it one last chance.

Ocean's 11 does ooze cool, and while I'm loathe to use the following phrase as any valid form of criticism for a film; it is a great popcorn flick of the highest order. Sure, it's basically some very pretty people trying to pull off an intricate seemingly impossible heist in the heart of flashy Las Vegas, but it's tongue-in-cheek enough to get away with it, looks amazing courtesy of Senor Soderbergh, and has a spark and energy sorely lacking in the sequel, which really just felt like a group of mates hanging out at our expense and caring more about playing some poker and smoking expensive cigars together off the set than making a film.
