Get Over It!

Get Over It!

I really thought this was tragic the first time I saw it on video years ago, but catching it on tele the other day made me realise it appears I overlooked the small bit of charm it doth possesses.

Yes, it's pretty tame when compared to the American Pie teen flicks, but Get Over It moves fast enough with such proud frivolity that it's really kindda watchable. School flicks revolving around school plays aren't new, but it is a minefield for material, and while they leave the mine relatively untapped, there are a few choice moments that anyone who was involved with school theatre – or subjected to it - may enjoy.

Ben Foster brings it as the pathetic spurned lover – he really is quite a great actor as his work on Six Feet Under proved, even in fluff such as this, while Martin Short is mildly amusing in an absolutely off-the-scale over-the-top way, and teen film-staple Scott West likewise as an ex-boy band member. Colin Hanks seems more than ever to be a mixture of his Oscar winning daddy's looks and his Uncle Jim's goofiness (refer to soft-porn flick Buford's Beach Bunnies for an example of Jim Hank's fine work), while Kirsten Dunst looks pretty smoking in a bikini.

File this under the somewhat-entertaining-yet-totally-mediocre teen high school rom-coms, like Whatever It Takes (which seems to share half the cast with this film), and Never Been Kissed .

I upgrade it from ‘tragic' to ‘pleasantly banal'.
