American Dreamz

American Dreamz

As satire American Dreamz is not sharp in the slightest. As a comedy it's just not very funny. The film dances with political issues, (well, it includes both Iraq and terrorists) but has nothing really to say about anything whatsoever. It assumes it's funny simply to reference American Idol and terrorism. Thinks it is hilarious to have a President that's a dumb-ass and basically a puppet for those scheming White House types. It's not, and not even Mandy Moore can save it from utter shitness. Nor can Hugh Grant, who working with his About A Boy director again fails to repeat that film's shining spark, and here manages only a few amusing lines, not enough to keep your mind from drifting back to the real-life President saying something dumb-ass on the evening news, or laughing at the crapness of a real Idol contestant massacring yet another classic song while the clueless judges think up new ways to say the same nothing over and over again. Basically, why watch this film's piss-poor pale imitations of the real thing, when the real thing is so much more entertaining?
